Collecting Golf Memorabilia

Collecting Golf memorabilia is a popular hobby with a long tradition in the U.K. Although the exact origins of golf are truly unknown, the modern game of

golf is known to have originated in Scotland around about the 12th century. Here a few shepherds would knock stones into rabbit holes on the current site of

the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.

In recent history, golf memorabilia has gone from being an enjoyable pastime or hobby for children into an adult-themed recreation that is now known to be

multi-million dollar industry. It can be at times be slightly complicated and frightening to a novice sports fan that is endeavouring to start collecting

golf memorabilia.
Below are 5 tips you might want to take into consideration before you embark on this new hobby.

1. Don’t do it for the money.

Golf memorabilia can at times be big business but don’t be fooled, as this is not an easy way to make money. If your intention is to make a quick financial

turnover or for a long-term investment then I am sure you could find something more worthwhile to invest your efforts money in.
You will find that most collectors loose out from a purely financial sense. But having said this if your love and passion for the sport is strong enough and

you are sincere about the items you collect then you cannot fail.

2. Follow your fancies not the trends.

The mistake that many collectors make is to spend a lot of precious time and hard earned cash pursuing the latest trend or craze, but the nature of this

hobby is fast passing, so if you were to pursue you could very quickly realise you are left with a pretty worthless piece of memorabilia that you were not

particularly keen on in the first place. The best thing to do is base your purchase on your own personal preference and passion for the items then if nothing

else they will always have a special meaning and value to you.

3. Only buy authenticated memorabilia.

This can be big business, which can and does attract the type of dealers who just want to part you from your money with no thought of their wrongdoing so

beware!
There is a wide range of authentication services nowadays so always check to make certain that you are not buying an unauthenticated item.
You will often find memorabilia items on certain websites such as: E Bay the prices may be fantastic and you will think you have stuck gold, but avoid these

sites as these items really are too good to be true if you know what I mean.

4. Do your research.

Most collectors will tell you that the research of certain items is one of the many joys of the hobby. It will often enlighten and reveal such sports history

that were not known to us before and would not have been known without the research.
I’m sure at one time or another we have all been guilty of an impulse buy but let’s face facts it is better to pass on that fantastic deal rather than ending

up with an expensive item which you failed to research first.

5. Spend the time and money to preserve your collection.

Collectors will spend vast amounts of money on a particular item only to be foolish enough not to provide the necessary casing in which to preserve the item.
So keep a check on your budget and make sure you include a portion of your budget for the casing etc to ensure that the memorabilia you buy will be preserved

for a lifetime and that one day will become a much loved and treasured family heirloom.
